Leah Hollins, IH Chair, presents award, joins Auxiliary

Leah Hollins presented an award of appreciation and gratitude at the Auxiliary’s annual general meeting Tuesday June 19th.

AWARD2018In presenting this lovely award to Auxiliary President Val Smith, Hollins noted that both the hospital and Auxiliary were started 35 years ago.  She pointed to the millions of dollars’ of equipment and amenities the Auxiliary has raised for the patients.  Recently the VGH Auxiliary created The Oasis@3North:  A project of the AUXILIARY, which created a haven on an unused third-floor rooftop at the hospital.  The Oasis is accessible to patients, visitors, staff, and volunteers to relax, have lunch, and chat. Before Leah Hollins became Island Health Chair last September she had an amazing career in various government positions including deputy minister of health in BC.  She showed her support and understanding of the function of hospital auxiliaries, by joining the VGH Auxiliary Tuesday.

The Auxiliary started in 1983 when the hospital opened its doors.  They helped pay for automatic closing/opening main doors, the helipad, lots of equipment including an emergency $50,000 purchase to replace a broken intubating scope just weeks ago.  Women, men, and teens help fund-raise in various ways.  The main source of revenue is the all-volunteer-run hospital shop on the concourse, featuring wonderful fresh flowers, clothing, hand-knitted baby layettes, home decor items, and lots else.  Auxiliary President Val Smith said, “Anyone interested in helping may inquire in the shop or This email address is being protected from spambots.
